This refers to the section of the Internal Revenue Code that describes your organization. In general, this tax exempt status will be identified in the "Letter of Determination" that you receive from the IRS in response to your application form for tax exempt status. For your reference, below are some brief descriptions of these tax exempt categories.  For more detailed information, see Publication 557 on the IRS website:

501(c)(3) – Charitable Organizations

501(c)(4) – Generally, Organizations that Lobby on Public Policy Issues (for example, social security, environmental issues, etc.)

501(c)(5) – Unions, Agricultural Organizations

501(c)(6) – Business Membership Organizations

501(c)(7) – Recreation Clubs

501(c)(8) – Fraternal Organizations

501(c)(10)- Domestic Fraternal Societies

501(c)(12) – Benevolent Associations

501(c)(19) – Veterans Organizations
